Why are Winmodems bad???

Modems can be classified into two basic types. One type is the hardware based modem, which has many components built into the modem itself that help with the various functions necessary in establishing & maintaining a connection. Another type is commonly referred to as a Winmodem or a Softmodem, which is (at least partially) a software based design that relies more heavily on your computer’s resources to function. The Winmodems and Softmodems are the type of modem that many brand name computer manufactures (Gateway, IBM, HP, CTX, & Compaq to name a few) have begun to include with their computers to cut costs.

Winmodems/Softmodems seem to operate best in places with very little or no noise in the phone lines and in newer computer systems with a great deal of excess CPU resources. Unfortunately, these optimal line conditions usually exist only in cities. Many of the phone lines in the areas that Lara services are far from optimal (no offense to the local phone companies - the distances traveled with phone lines in rural areas is just too great) and cause a great deal of problems for Winmodems/Softmodems. These problems include slow connection speeds, dropped connections, and not being able to connect at all.

We strongly recommend against using any brand, make, or model Winmodem or Softmodem as they consistently fail to perform sufficiently in less than optimal line conditions If you have a Winmodem/Softmodem in your computer & experience connection difficulties, your modem is most likely the problem & should be the first issue that you address to correct your problem - there is simply little that we can do to help your situation if you have a Winmodem/Softmodem. If your computer’s manufacturer cannot provide you with a hardware based modem, you should consider contacting a local computer shop to have the modem replaced.

We have replaced a number Winmodems and Softmodems by customer request and in every case, all of their connection problems were corrected. No - this is not a scam or sales pitch. The fact is software modems are cheap & that's probably why the company that built your computer put it in there in the first place - to make a buck.

Lara ISP will be happy to replace your Winmodem or Softmodem with a hardware based modem at no risk to you should you have any doubts - if it does not correct your connection problems we will gladly re-install your old modem & refund your modem purchase in full including installation charges. If you have any questions about modems, we would be happy to answer them! Remember that your modem is the most important part of your Internet connection!!!
