Modem Information
|
What is a Modem:
Acronym for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms.

We recommend you read about what a WinModem is and why to avoid them when buying a
system. Click here to read about it.
We recommend almost any Hardware based (non WinModem). We have had good
success with USRobotics Hardware Modems
- US Robotics V.90 PCI Hardware Voice OEM Fax Modem
This is the only modem we buy.
Any WinModem or Software modem is not recommended by LARA. No matter what
make even USRobotics WinModems are not recommended. They require CPU power,
generally do not handle line quality issues well and are a major source of
problems for our customers. We recommend you get a good quality hardware modem
if you are going to be using the internet a fair amount of time.
A Driver is the software that your operating system (Windows 95/98/2000 etc..)
requires to run the hardware installed in it. The Modem Driver is just the files
that the modem maker ships with its hardware or provides online that runs your
specific modem. Unfortunately there are thousands of modems and makes and many are
no longer in production/business. However use the search links below to find the
driver belonging to your modem if you require it.
Searching for a driver try: http://www.windrivers.com/
Win Drivers.com is a resource of thousands of drivers for almost all hardware types.
